>"it is not only without supporting evidence, it is hard to conceive just what kind of evidence might convincingly support it if it could be found."
Depends on what you call "convincing". Have you been abreast of research into consciousness? There's plenty to prove we are all inextricably linked on a type of communication highway instantaneously and at great distances. Plants, animals and humans. And there's plenty of proof of this.
>"To say that refusing to think about something forces that concept to emerge later as symbols in dreams or as neurotic behavior, makes no sense without the hydraulic pressure theory."
I'm not up on Freud, but people have a tendency to bury problems or urges deep into their subconscious instead of dealing with them directly.
So, I would think they would be better able to analyse themselves by constantly watching their dreams and trying to interpret them. I have had a copy of the Dreamer's Dictionary" for the past 25-30 years and have been analysing my dreams since then. More in the past. I know enough that if I dream I'm swimming in dirty water or can't get in a shower or rinse the shampoo out of my hair, I'll be getting sick within three days. Never fails.
Fire dreams are warnings, better hope you didn't get burned.
Snakes are sexual objects in your dreams. What it does to you is a good representation of your relationships. Or better yet, what you do to it.
>"Dreams are just a by product of the maintenance procedure."
Mostly, but I think we miss a lot of clues as to what is happening around us by not paying attention to them. You can train yourself to wake up but not open your eyes or even become conscious of anything (the room around you, the time, what you have to do that day), just stop and be there and look around in your dream. Remember WHAT you were dreaming. You can often access the same time line and remember most of the dream. It's like a movie that's still playing. Going through it, you can make mental notes and then fully wake up and quickly write them down.
When I read back on some of my more memorable dreams, I can see they posited situations I was in as if it existed in an alternate reality.
Perhaps they made little sense to me then, but a year or two later re-reading them, I can see my subconscious knew THEN the quandry I was in. I was walking around in my own problems.
I have trained myself to be aware of subconscious visions and motivations. There are times I can see past this dimension and get into a free flow of energy where ALL time exists. I know I'm right on target when (for instance)....I wake, and without opoening my eyes......correctly guess the EXACT time on my bedroom clock. When I used to set the alarm for work, I'd wake up a minute BEFORE the alarm went off, so I wouldn't have to listen to it blast me out of bed. Another thing I have is often hearing a song and certain verse in my mind, go up to the radio and turn it on....and that same song, same verse, same line is EXACTLY as it is my mind is on the radio. Now, WHY is that?
If I can do it, everyone else should be able to if they train themselves, test themselves and are open to it.
>"Freud is to be honored for being the first to attempt to put psychology on a scientific basis, instead of a religious or mystical one."
There's a fine line in the new cosmology as we attempt to find out who we really are by linking ourselves to the energy of the cosmos....the search for our meaning is (I believe) electrical in nature. And there is some proof that this is true.
I also agree with you on psychology or psychiatry as not having all the answers. Some people just don't fit into the box. However, I see the trade as being exceedinlgy helpful, especially if a troubled or drug-addicted individual is willing to undergo self-analysis and recognize the negative behaviour patterns. Others can be helped by balancing their brain chemicals or hormones. Others are better locked up if meds can't help them. Although we're waay past that discussion.
As for the dream you had (the one that I analysed), my answer is found on another thread. I hope you found the answer to the quandry you were in. Very bright people often are so far ahead of everyone else, that few people understand them. You should find a group of people and move among them...like maybe the Social Dreaming Matrix by Dr. Lawrence.
Have you heard of the work of Cleve Backster?
How about Dr. Masaru <Emoto?>
