re: The Big-Rip.

Hello,

LJK (and others) what are your personal opinions regarding phantom energy (where the sum of the pressure and energy density is negative), and the Big-Rip theory. What do you believe will happen?

I used to be a proponent of the Big Crunch - partially due to the number, size, and overall power of supermassive black holes. That said, the continued (accelerating) expansion of the universe has me re-examining the Big Rip.

"In a phantom energy dominated universe the "fabric" of the universe expands at an ever increasing rate. However, this implies that the size of the observable universe is continually shrinking; the distance to the edge of the observable universe which is moving away at the speed of light from any point gets ever closer. When the size of the observable universe is smaller than any particular structure, then no interaction between the furthest parts of the structure can occur, neither gravitational nor electromagnetic (nor weak or strong), and they will be ripped apart."

The theories about our universe having a sudden, violent, and massive singularity are also quite fascinating.

I wish we had a better understanding of space-time, dark matter, etc.
