Working too hard.

I have always advocated electronic systems that print a backup "ballot" cards which could then be stored in traditional secure ballot boxes as paper ballots have for years. These boxes could be broken out if there was ever the need for a recount (in my idea, the prinouts would have both clear text, and an optical-reading section for recounts both ways.)

Paper backup means you don't have to sweat blood trying to create the unhackable computer.

The system we had here in the last election wasn't as elegant as mine: a printout appeared on a paper tape under a window, and I could look at it there and confirm the vote. When the vote was done, the tape rolled up out of sight. I'd hate to have to do a manual count on these things, but it would be possible.

One thing I've always noticed: It's never assumed in these discussions that Democrats would hack these machines. It's not like there aren't liberal computer geeks out there.
