MSL is going to use skycrane for the final descent to the surface, but used to insist this wouldn't work

It seems though, pretty risky to use such a sophisticated landing technique as part of a completely automated sequence in a quite different atmospheric and gravity regime. Bouncing Kevlar-enclosed probes is one thing, but this does seem much trickier, and so far only validated on Earth. I hope they know what they're doing ...
