Trompe L'oeil
It was probably very deliberate - designed to present an image that was intriguing yet strangely odd. Most people wouldn't have known WHY it was odd, but they would have been drawn to the oddness of it and would, perhaps, remember the beer better for it.
If you only upset astronomers but intrigue everyone elese, you'll sell a lot of beer!
