Off Topic » in reply to The Prevalence of Nonsense by Ashley Montagu & Edward Darling

Life is just one long Mexican movie.

The existence and durability of superstition, religion, and ideology is solely due to the refusal of the human mind to accept that the universe is totally indifferent to us; and other than providing a framework of impersonal physical laws to manage physical reality, has no direct affect on us. The only thing that really matters to our conscious minds is our own existence, and the existence of those we love.

If you're surprised that I consider ideology as equivalent to religion and superstition, keep in mind that I'm not without prejudices about how we manage our communal affairs. But those opinions are based on what I consider beneficial to my community and to humanity, and hence, to me and my loved ones. I don't think there's a set of rules somewhere that guarantee virtue or evil depending on whether or not they're followed.
