re: re:You skirted around my question.

No, your question is sophistry. Tangled legalisms and involuted what ifs and unrealistic situations. If the commandments were to somehow become rigidly enforced it would have to be done by magic, it cannot happen in the real world, and if it could happen, say by magic or the command of god, then you wouldn't need the commandments in the first place.

THe commandments are useful as a guidelines, but cannot be rigidly enforced. The same can be said for the golden rule, a concept common to many religions and of wonderful implications and potential, but the fact remains that not everyone is going to do it.

My original comment, which aroused your interest, was my remark

"I don't think there's a set of rules somewhere that guarantee virtue or evil depending on whether or not they're followed."

I was thinking in terms of ideology. A political or philosophical ideology may be useful in certain situations, to organize one's thought into consistent systems or to view chaotic events as part of some larger process. But once one decides to reject all deviations from the ideology as incorrect, the contradictions start popping up.

For example, it was part and parcel of Geopolitical thought as expounded by Mackinder and Mahan that Russia's lack of convenient ice-free ports had a great influence on her foreign policy. This is a perfectly valid statement and could well guide a nations's foreign policy vis-a-vis Russia. I'm sure the Russians were perfectly aware of it too.

But you can't PREDICT Russian politics or diplomacy or strategy by slavishly applying this principle. It may have other agendas, or even conflicting views and priorities within its own leadership.

If you've been following my posts, you may have noticed that I have a deep mistrust of ideology while having one of my own. I find that it allows me to make sense of the world by giving me a uniform interpretation of events, and it can help me form my response to events. But at the same time it can force me to undertake actions which make no practical sense. Ideologues do this all the time, look at some of the opinions communicated in this forum! People take absurd positions simply because their ideology is not flexible enough to consider modification of their preconceptions.

In the fields of morals and ethics, the golden rule is an excellent policy to use when dealing with others, but to insist on using it all the time is
just an to leave yourself open to abuse.
