"Who is John Galt?"

Actually, Tom, as often happens, what the RightWingers are chattering about hasn't made it out into the real world. I've never heard of "George Harleigh", and to tell ya the truth, I've never heard the one about about Bush screaming that the Constitution is "just a goddammed piece of paper". I can see how that one could quickly become an urban legend, since the quote, even if fictional, matches Bush's contempt for the Constitution demonstrated by his actions. It's common-sense plausible.

From what I can tell from a quick Google on "George Harleigh", he was invented some time in 2003, probably as a collective effort at Capitol Hill Blue. Judging by the quotes, and what might be references to an inside joke on some Leftish boards, "George Harleigh" is a character designed specifically for the purpose of winding up wingers. "George Harleigh" is a nom de plume in the tradition of the psuedonyms used by the Founders when they wrote the Federalist Papers, and honored in fiction by Orson Scott Card's characters in the Ender saga writing as "Locke" and "Demosthenes".

From another perspective, you could think of "George Harleigh" as another "John Galt", a mythical character who exists to speak words of quotable wisdom.
