Thanks, Larry. This is one of the sites I checked out, but none of this artwork, terrific as it is, is the work I remember so vividly. The style is similar, but the stuff I recall was all over book covers in those days and if it was Powers at least some examples would have survived in sites devoted to him. My guess is that it was some lesser known, but highly prolific, illustrator who either influenced, or was influenced by, Powers. My guess is the former, since I think most of the work I saw predated most of Power's examples. I'm going top have to start haunting some used book stores until I find an example.
