The quote you brought forth from Jefferson would indicate he had a platform of psuedo-contempt of the rich, which goes with my original post about the pope poopy.
I feel, in order to quote someone about such things, the one being quoted should perhaps not be so blatantly hypocritical....to offer up validity...in my reality.
Jefferson enjoyed his lifestyle. He did not go without. He was a hypocrite...by virtue of the quote.
