Then don't use quotes to make your points.
"There is nothing Thomas Jefferson said two centuries ago that is relevant today."
This, of course, is not true either. The fundamentals of tyranny and freedom haven't changed in a thousand years, never mind two hundred.
That won't stop people from attempting to retcon Jefferson (or Kennedy) into something they weren't, or desperately try to distract people from Jefferson's extensive philosophical legacy with the "slave" red herring.
