Johnson won against Goldwater by declaring that we would be at war if people voted for Goldwater. A lot of people did, and Johnson was right.

I will grant you that modern Democratic leaders aren't belligerent. In fact, they're anything but. Try to imagine America staring down the Soviet Union and winning the Cold War under Carter, Mondale, and Dukakis.
