ER is referring to surveys that show a dramatic rise in denial of evolution in recent years. Yet at the same time, various surveys show that religious belief has remained at about the same level, or only slightly lower, for many decades. Yet the "inclination to disbelieve evolution" is growing. How can increasing ignorance be blamed solely on religion if religiosity isn't increasing? Does it make any sense to discount the dogged and well-funded campaigns on the right during the same period, aimed at discrediting science and rationality, focusing particularly on smearing evolution and climate change?
Doesn't wash, Frank. While I agree that there's an intimate relationship between religion and ignorance, it's been exploited and amplified by rightwing demagogues.
