Climate science and evolutionary biology have nothing to do with politics, but when a position on one is held by the other side, or when it represents a potential economic threat to your side's hegemony, it suddenly becomes part of the cultural war. It must be opposed lest it be used to attack your already tenuous legitimacy.
This is why Republicans are now bitterly opposing ideas they originated and once championed but which their opponents are now adopting.
Conservatives see themselves as the true inheritors of America; they came here on the Mayflower. But they are now outnumbered by a coalition of those who came in on slave ships, or steamships (to Ellis Island). And now there's a third wave, coming in on jet airliners.
They don't want to share with us. But we were invited. We have every right to be here, and they are just going to have to accept it. That's why they hate Obama. He doesn't even have slave roots. His paternal DNA came from EAST Africa.
Who knows, maybe he did too. 8)
