If alliances change, then it means two things:
Countries are not necessarily hostile to each other.
Threats are not the same as what they used to be.
As long as there is a willingness to recognize new situations and to cope with them, it should be ok.
One danger is to use old means for new dangers: like using an army to combat terrorism.
