And come to the reality that world events are not a bloody football game. It is inconceivable that an intelligent person would have to reduce events to a game of one on one and not be able to look at situations on their merit.
It is factitous to suggest "I guess that would make sense if you sided with the Soviets at the time." I applauded giving the Soviets back some of what they gave us in Viet Nam. But, I recognize a tactical as well as strategic ploys and understand their positions in engagements.
Know what your opponent is doing and understand it is an ancient tenent of warfare. To adopt the dictum that you must support the enemy of your enemy is a violation of your own best interests.
