A Minor Concession
Your concern about numbers shared by many others is why I'm in favor of a dwarf planet class as long as we can find a natural transition to distinguish them from terrestrial planets (and I think we can). That way we have a group like the asteroids clearly of lesser importance that people can feel free not to learn all the names of.
