Question of the day for US HZers

I just discovered an area high school offers a class in "religious instruction" and students walk across to a LDS church across the street for the class. As far as my recollection goes this seems like a massive violation of church/state exclusion.

It's not surprising to find out that kids here have just been rated as the 'dumbest' in the fifty states.

Anyone else's state have classes such as this, blatantly blending religion with public education? Is this what's been going on in backwater regions all over the place with the locals near uniform consent? Or is this something unique I've stumbled across?
