Hindsight now tells us that we probably should've let the Soviets clean up in Afghanistan without interference. That worked out real well for us arming and empowering the Mujadeen and making a hero out of Bin Laden.
Actually, the one thing I really hated about Carter's reign was him having us sit out the Olympics in Moscow because of Afghanistan. The KGB probably breathed a huge sigh of relief not having to contain all the American tourists that would've flooded into the Soviet Union.
Instead, Carter should've authorized compensation to any American citizen wishing to attend the games and we could've flooded Russia with American capitalism at its finest. Imagine millions of Americans deluging Moscow. What kept the commies in power was the misinformation that our citizens were these violent, greedy, and immoral bastards. Lots of Soviets would've gotten a different message with all the visiting hordes.
