Wow Scott. You're so right as usual. There are without a doubt people in the military with advanced degrees. They're called officers. Now the interesting thing about the makeup of the military is the proportion of enlisted men (the workers) to the officers (management). Being a good Republican businessman, I'm certain you understand that businesses do best when the proportion of management to worker is very low since the production comes from the grunts.

That's how it seems to be in the military as well. The guys with the guns, the ones walking past the IED's, the ones breaking down doors, driving the trucks at breakneck speeds through hostile Iraqi neighborhoods generally aren't your PhD's. Most are probably lucky to have a high school diploma or more likely a GED. If they were tops in their high school classes they usually have the brains to figure out how to get into one of the more safe jobs such as administration, communications, technical repair, etc. It's been years but I remember seeing studies that indicated the highest IQ's generally enlisted in the Navy or Air Force and the lower ones ended up in the Army or Marine Corps. Of course there's exceptions but I can tell you from first hand experience that it's very rare.

When's the last time you strolled past a recruiting office and took a look at the bunch waiting to be processed? Do that sometime. Engage a few in conversation and tell me these folks are the next generation of rocket scientists. Ask a few about what options they have in their lives.
