It's a puzzlement.

Clearly there are threats from outer space which could possibly someday impact the Earth. It would be devastating.

And there are threats right here on Earth which ARE impacting the Earth, with devasting results in the not to dim, distant future. Population, for one, with all it's attendant pollution. Demands on water, air, food, etc. Shifting climates, and no mechanism to handle the disruptions of population, food production and distribution, energy generation, and so on.

Why are people so worried about matters with frequencies in the millions and millions of years, and not in the ones measured in the tens and hundreds?

It doesn't make sense. It truly doesn't.

EXCEPT - if one says that the outer space threat would be cataclysmic. (Which the "inner space" threats will be, too.) Well, in that case there's nothing which can be done about it now anyway.

Take care of Mother Earth. Period. The immediate threats now. The remote threats when there is the ability to deal with them. And something worth protecting.
