Actually the computing power for image search is not that great. There are a number of amateur written packages that do the job on the average PC but we (amateurs) are not dealing with 8k x 8k (or larger) CCD images - but nothing really compares to the trained Mark 1 eyeball as the FMO exercise at Spaceguard showed.
