When people typically say anything to get elected like Bush promising to run a bipartisan administration. I can't say Bush outright lied about wanting a bipartisan approach in 2000 as he had a much more bipartisan reputation in Texas, but I think he was dealing with a democratic legislature at least in part. He may have intended to continue in that manner, but felt differently after the Democrats win at any cost and demonization response to the election. As a matter of fact that very attitude may have contributed to the Republican's taking that attitude to the next level. At any rate I don't recall any period of bipartisanship in his administration. While no child left behind was a bipartisan mistake of taking a good idea too far, he was ramming tax cuts through for his key demographic supporters at the same time.
Nancy on the other hand did not promise bipartisanship before the election that I know of. Most comments from her that caught my attention left an impression of Bush deranged syndrome. Continuing in that mode would be a recipe for deadlock, but many leftwingers including some here would love to go after Bush with both Barrels ASAP for some serious payback as if ignoring their wishes were treason rather than politics. Nancy has sobbered up enough to say Hey I want to be remembered for getting things done as the first female speaker not as chief bitch. Get past the convenient words and think about motivations. I think she understands clearly that what she is saying is what the country needs and that she wants a positive legacy as a groundbreaker.
The question is does she have the self control to stifle impulses she gave free reign to while out of power. I don't know, but as an independent I am thrilled so far with the response from her and Bush. I have high hopes that we can return to operating similar to the divided congress during the Clinton Era minus the witch hunts. Spending increases stymied by competing priorities. New laws passed only with broad public support.
One things for sure unless our elected leaders embrace the bipartisan words Nancy's spouting with true conviction this country will continue these wild pendulum swings in power.
Guardedly Optimistic,
Mark
