Another question is why you help him to hide - but then that is another question.
Supposedly an idea will fall or stand on its own merits, so who thought it is irrelevant. Supposedly a claim of fact will fall or stand as a perception of reality, if it accords with existence, regardless of who pointed it our first.
But I don't think that covers smear campaigns, IMO
