I've never understood string theories

I imagine they are an extreme version of wave mechanics, applied to sub-atomic particles and processes, but I just don't understand the math well enough to extrapolate anything. I think it was DeBroglie who suggested that particles were an infinitely spread wave with a peak at one location, but later it was suggested that particles were actually wave packets (Bohr?) with a definite truncation, and not infinite in extent. I really don't know which is correct. Both theories indicate that particles are not a wave-particle duality at all, but are entirely wavelike. The question is, whether they are smeared out across the universe, interconnected with all the matter in the universe in some kind of unimaginably complex interference pattern.... or if they are just in one small volume like a vibrating loop of string. One thing is certain, the math is hard.
