re: Orwell knew where

It's possible that this is an example of the pitfalls of relying on links to tell the story for you. You and Malkin are both talking about something without actually saying what it is that has you upset. I commented on what I saw when I followed your link to Malkin's blog. Half of it consisted of the statement from the Iraq MOI warning the "brothers" of the dire conseqences of not getting their news only from the MOI. After the statement the rest of the blog consists of quotes from various people who are upset by a story that the AP ran that I think they believe, reading between the lines, has been falsified.

That would be a very bad thing indeed, so I'll take your question as rhetorical. But the eagerness of Rightists to make the AP into a scapegoat justifying censoring the news out of Iraq is all too painfully obvious. If the MOI gets its way, you'll love the daily Good News From Iraq! show, with its dancing happy-face logo. We'd never be bothered by unpleasantness like Abu Gharaib and wouldn't have to think about death and destruction and all those other untidy and totally insignificant details.

We'll never see eye-to-eye on this, of course. I'm not about to give up the protection of a free press no matter what one news organization does. If AP faked that story, it doesn't justify censorship.
