re: our abilities as a model

All excellent points, reflecting back to mine: In other words, a case could be made that each one of your subroutines (if you'll pardon the analogy), or a combination of them, has been used if what we call The World is a simulation.

Given (once again) that we are sims, either all of our code has been written before implementation, or the greater program has an ability to learn and change its response as the simulation runs. I prefer the latter, for a bunch of reasons... but whether given or developed, we have the ability to accept or reject "received wisdom", and we tend to fall squarely into one or the other of those two camps.

Consider the simulated scientists. Their method cannot, by definition, discover anything that doesn't "exist" -- i.e., is not written into the simulation code as a detail of the environment, including such things as cosmology and physics. I consider it feasible that a keen team of simulators who concentrate on the progress of science and technology within the simulation are able to introduce fine detail as the simulated ability to detect it develops. Nevertheless, they abhor claims about the nature of reality that have not been empirically observed.

Consider, then, the mystics:

c) include the "knowledge" within the body of the program itself (simulator creates a simulatee or modifies an existing simulatee to have the knowledge of the true state of the universe...

Sounds a lot like the Buddha to me.

And, if we broaden our hypothesis to include post facto reinterpretation of the revelations of other 'prophets', or their own misinterpretation (owing to less-developed awareness in the past -- which leads to another speculation about the passage of sim time vs. realtime, best left for another time...), we could include a huge list of visionaries.

"The kingdom of heaven is within you," for example... (which maps nicely onto "There is no spoon", as far as I'm concerned.)

The problem remains: all of our examples initially deal with individual sims. The more charismatic of them will gain followers -- perhaps billions, over time -- but in this world there has yet to be a revelation without skeptics, persecutors, apostates, schisms and atheists. In other words, if the simulators have something of critical importance to communicate, they'd better do it to everyone at once, in a manner leaving no doubt of its 'otherwordly' origin.

That's assuming they want the simulation to remain running, of course. Otherwise: "File/Save As...", then Reboot.
