I'm watching this with intent interest. A large conventional force has just displaced the Islamists from major positions in Somalia. The Islamists have, for the most part, simply vanished, rather than been killed or captured.

Now Somalia, a nation like Iraq that started out with a large contingent of competing hostile political forces, waits.

Will the Islamists try the same tactics on Ethiopia as they're trying on us?

Will Ethiopia restrain the warlords?

Or will Ethiopia declare the job done, and bug out, something many think we should have done in Iraq. And then what will happen?

Not quite a laboratory experiment on Iraq policy, but in some ways close. In any case, we might learn something.
