Dear Colleagues,
The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) will be sponsoring a Lunar
Dust Workshop on January 30 - February 1, 2007 at the NASA Ames Research
Center. The focus of this 3-day workshop will be on effects of lunar
dust for crewed and robotic missions to the moon, as well as possible
mitigation procedures and technologies to protect astronauts and vehicles.
Lunar dust has been recognized as a significant challenge to prolonged
human presence on the moon. While there have been a number of
independent efforts to address the concern of lunar dust, this workshop
will provide a venue for all to discuss their findings.
The specific goals of this workshop include:
* To bring together the diverse group of individuals currently
studying lunar dust issues with the designers and operators of
hardware that will operate in the lunar environment.
* To gain consensus on the major engineering, scientific, and
medical issues relating to lunar dust, along with the priority of
resolving these issues.
* To begin developing a strategy for mitigation of the most critical
issues, including timelines and measurable criteria for success.
The format for this workshop will include summary presentations, working
group sessions, and continuous poster presentations. The workshop will
be limited to approximately 150 invited attendees. Individuals
interested in attending this workshop should contact Michael Sims at
Michael.Sims@arc.nasa.gov . Further announcements with additional
details will follow.
Sincerely,
Daniel Winterhalter
