I'm sure you have this covered but...
If your mobo has more than two memory slots, besure you have it in the correct one for dual channel mode. Assuming were talking about DDR mem.
Also, windows uses it's page file when you run low on RAM. It might still be relying upon it as much as it did when you had 512.
