Think of the victim. Will turning her attacker loose because her attacker is an astronaut restore the victim's sense of personal safety?
She sprayed mace into the open window of her victim's car, she plotted a kidnapping (a felony), and she was caught disposing of evidence, which shows she knew what she was doing even if her personal self-control was shot.
If her career is finished, it probably should be. She has an education, and as you point out, she's young. She can find something else to do. Plenty of people work in sweatshops who never did anything to anyone.
Perhaps the best way to go is to plead diminished capacity and hope for a suspended sentence, mandatory psychiatric treatment, and retirement with pension. It would be more mercy than people guilty of similar offenses with more problems but few if any cheerleaders ever get.
