The American Revolution was only a sideshow in a long struggle between France and England that went on for decades. Most of it was fought, and decided, at sea. One of the few strategic defeats suffered by the Brits was a victory by the French Fleet which forced the British to withdraw, leaving their armies stranded ashore, and allowed the French to land troops to aid our forces at Yorktown, ending the war.
