At least a self-sustaining long-term human colony isn't going to happen.
The needs of large mammals are too complex to be met with any technology existing or foreseeable. Oxygen, water and electrical energy are the easy ones. Aluminum, some other metals and and some chemicals would be easy, too.
How about antibiotics, anesthetics, anti-depressants (you think living underground ain't gonna grind on people?), anti-cancer drugs, MRI's, X-Ray film? CPUs, memory, spare parts for compressors, valves, pumps? The machines to fabricate the parts to repair same? Fabrics, shoes, gloves, plastics, tubing, glues, tapes? How to replace all the stuff which can't be protected and is degraded by radiation?
What about the attitudes taken with them, such as those which prevent technologically advanced humans from keeping this place liveable? How about basic human human nature as a predator? What about the stresses driving folks nuts, with no place to go? Nowak's actions are only exceptional in degree, and not that unusual, either.
People will evolve, I've heard? How many generations? How many thousands of years does that take?
Interesting that capitalism sure wouldn't work, would it? The concept of "private property", except for personal items, would be dead.
It's a fun fantasy with a foundation on sand. Ultimately, these conjectures belong with the UFO and "Face on Mars" stuff, though.
