Why Astros Go Postal - and a way to help fix it
Homer Hickam writes on the pressures in the astronaut office flight pool and a common-sense way to reduce (not eliminate) substantial strain. His view is very similar to that detailed in several chapters of the excellent "Riding Rockets" astronaut autobiography. Too many Type AAA astros and far too few flight opportunities. Years of stress, frustration and misplaced envy.
So...cut down on the high # of pilot astronauts and fill the mission specialist ranks from the best engineer/scientists of the world. Train them for their flight and then back to their careers. Cheaper, better quality and less stressfull than a standing army of 'astronaut' flight engineers.
