Cheap Climate Engineering Against Global Warming

The always excellent Future Pundit site poses an interesting question. Will it be possible for us to engineer inexpensive climate control? And if so, should we?

On a related front, Toon et. al. have updated their earlier Nuclear Winter analysis to describe the cooling effects of a more limited nuclear exchange around 100 Hiroshima size detonations in a hypothetical India Pakistan exchange. Their thesis states that particulate matter in the stratosphere cools the climate. It should not be horrendously difficult or expensive to introduce particulate matter by more benign means as one possible short term cooling method.

Bottom line as always, we still have lots to learn about the climate, short term and long term; we still know neither the absolute nor relative magnitudes of the various climate change drivers, natural vs human; no climate models are accurate enough to even model the past yet; and yesterday's govt based Kyoto-style solutions may pale vs more innovative interventions, should they be needed.
