Nuke Defense-
I think it was Edward Teller who once advocated to Congress testing a nuke on an asteroid to see if we could alter its orbit. Basically a good idea but as you point out not pc and it never made much headway. One of his critics said (going on memory but something like this) "Teller's never seen a problem he doesn't have a nuke for..."
