Justification for mars research
Given the potential cost of either massively reducing CO2 emissions (especially if for no good reason), or, letting horrible impacts of global warming happen (when it could have been avoided), I'd say that searching for Mars/Earth climate correlations is a HUGELY important topic. Easily worth tens of billions if it let us nail things down one way or the other.
