It's Vancil.
The logic is not how many unready aircraft were forced into service, but how much testing and under what pressures they came into service. They only prove how desperate the Third Reich was not how fragile rocket powered aircraft are. Also if you're going to argue that "large numbers" must be in service then many early product aircraft don't fit the term.
You asked what production rocket planes have there been...possibly RATO/JATO. I can see the argument that they were only assisted on takeoff by rockets and therefore not really produce rocket planes. But, there is one rocket plane Bell didn't include which logically he should have Spaceship 1.
BTW, Bell will be on The Space Show this Thurday night.
I qoute David's newsletter found here:
The 3. The Thursday, March 15, 2007 Space Show from 7-8:30 PM Pacific Time welcomes back Dr. Jeff Bell. Dr. Bell will be discussing his recent Space Daily article, Rocket Plane Roulette from March 7, 2007. You can read his article at www.spacedaily.com/reports/Rocket_Plane_Roulette_999.html. This is your opportunity to talk with Dr. Bell about his article, research, conclusions, point of view or anything else. If you agree, disagree, or simply want more information, here’s your chance to engage Dr. Bell in a constructive dialog. Listeners can talk to Dr. Bell or the host using toll free 1 (866) 687-7223, by sending e-mail during the program using dmlivings@yahoo.com, drspace@thespaceshow.com, thespaceshow@gmail.com, or chatting on AOL/ICQ/CompuServe Chat using the screen name “spaceshowchat.

The whole thread (21 posts)
- Rocket plane reliability
- Reliability is more of a maintenance issue.
- Bell is clearly not an engineering systems analyst as nearly every assumption he makes is wrong.

- Typical Bell
- The hybrid engines used for SS1 and SS2 are far safer than the engines used on any X plane.
- Ditto.
