Imagine the kicking and screaming if regulators required this stuff to be listed on food packaging, along with the other ingredients:
- number of maggots per 100 g
- number of insect fragments per 100 g
- number of whole aphids and mites per 100 g
- number of insect eggs per 100 g
- number of rodent hairs per 100 g
- grams of mammalian excreta per 100 g
- number of whole rodent excreta pellets per pound
- number of parasitic cysts per 100 g
- percent moldy or wormy
- percent rotten
- bacteria count
- number of pus pockets
It's a significant problem too. Last summer I bought a tin of peach halves in syrop, ate the whole thing, rinsed the tin out and dropped it in the recycling box. For the next week I was swatting fruit flies. I wonder where they came from? Certainly nothing on the label about fly eggs or maggots, ready to hatch and swarm as soon as I open the tin.
