We weren't in Vietnam when Saigon fell. The last of the Americans mostly left in 1973. In 1975, the communists poured into the country. They met no resistance, and the South Vietnamese given U.S. material aid that amounted to 20 cartridges and 2 hand grenades per soldier, couldn't turn them back.

Cash, and maybe some air support at this point, would have made all the difference.

At this point, as far as the Left and the media were concerned, Vietnam no longer existed. The goal had not been to give the Vietnamese freedom and peace. It had been to kick Amerikkka in the teeth. Mission accomplished. You can draw your own parallels to the current situation.

Morally consistent leftists like Joan Baez, who pointed out the horrors, were condemned or ignored.

It was obvious to anyone with a brain that the motivations behind the "movement" had little to do with fighting oppression, and a lot to do with anti-Westernism and anti-Americanism. It was quite easy to see when you saw which oppressive nations were targeted by the Left, and which ones were not only given a complete pass, but in many cases, actually lauded.

Don't know why you had to rewrite this history in your own mind. I can make some guesses. But the facts are out there. We bailed on the Vietnamese, even at the point of what the Democrats are calling "redeployment." And that's all the North needed.
