I think she is still grieving over her son and subconsciously can't wait to join him. However, this grief manifests as being abandoned by her God.
Has she given up? Maybe the depression never left her.
I hope not. I certainly wish her well. You can't explain these things to a fundamentalist and they have every right to believe as they do.
