You call them "idiots" because they do not do stupid things. What kind of intelligent logic is that?
The insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan are fighting the war they have to. They could not stand up to the US in a pitched battle, true. That would be idiotic folly.
So they don't. They are not that stupid.
They are using the tactics they have to, the tactics which are effective in terms of damage done, cost and manpower.
The US is trying to gain by force that which is not attainable by force. The old saying that if you have 'em by the balls their hearts and minds will follow is true. And if you don't have 'em by the balls, if you don't control the territory, if you don't have enough feet on the ground, what do you suppose happens? The US could have "won", if it had learned and applied the lessons of the recent past.
Iraq and Afghanistan. Two third-world countries which have brought the mightiest military power the world has ever seen to it's knees. Think about it. All the nuclear weapons, all the ABMs, all the folly, absolutely no good at all. How many size 10 boots could be purchased for the cost of one ABM? Which would do more good? How much profit is there in boots compared to missiles?
The "surge" is really a death shudder, or the prelude to an even bigger disaster for the US.
And you call them idiots. What does that make the US?

For want of size 10 boots, a war is lost. The "surge" is a death shudder.
