It was ALAN Shepard who made the first American space flight and
although Ed White was the first American to EVA (but not the first
overall - Alexi Leonov beat him by just a bit), it was Buzz Aldrin who
got going the idea of EVA training in a huge water tank. That's why
his EVAs on Gemini 12 were the most successful of the whole series.
