"Military surveys Iraq combat troops on ethics"

"About half would report killing of innocent civilians; 10 percent admit abuse."

Unless human nature has changed a lot in the last 40 years, these figures are complete nonsense. The military people have responded way they would like to behave instead of how they do. And the Iraqi people's response to the US occupation indicates they don't believe these numbers, either.

In my experience combat troops in close combat with guerillas not wearing uniforms and operating in a civilian environment would not report killing of innocent civilians. None of them would. That's clear from the numbers. (Obviously a miniscule number would, but less than 1 in a thousand.)

In Vietnam, the operational orders were that every dead Vietnamese was a dead VC. There were NO non-combatants.

And very, very close to 100 percent would have to admit participating in or observing abuse. Of those troops who were active.

Bush and Cheney are responsible for these crimes, not the boots on the ground. Bush and Cheney are responsible for putting these people into this position, the people there are not at fault. Bush and Cheney are the war criminals. If life were fair, if there were justice, they would have been hung years ago. Can I pre-emptively send people to kill my neighbor because I don't like him?

Bombs and bullets fight guerilla wars - hearts and minds win them. Despite unlimited bombs and bullets, Bush and Cheney have lost this war.

Big time.
