Ever read the sections from Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff about the space chimps?
I'm no PETA fan, but the way NASA treated them was abysmal, even
accounting for attitudes from the early 1960s towards primates.
Enos was apparently a difficult ape, so they put him in an enclosed
box for a week and let him sit in his own body waste. When they
let him out, he was much easier to handle.
And those pictures of Ham after his suborbital flight supposedly
grinning with joy for the media cameras? Shows how much the
media knows about primatology. When a chimpanzee is baring
its teeth at you, that isn't a grin - that's its way of saying I'm
really pissed and I am going to rip your face off.
