Sadr's return is most likely due to the splitting of his factions in Iraq and Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim heading overseas for medical treatment. This might be the last chance he has to save his power, and he either decided it was worth the risk, or his masters in Iran shoved him over the border to fix things or else.
