These people get no sympathy from me.
There is no shortage of qualified workers for mid-level jobs, only qualified young ones that will work for peanuts and no benefits are in short supply.
For example, if I were looking for a job to supplement my retirement income, I have enough general science and math background where I could work in any lab or technical shop as a tech. I remember enough of my high school chemistry to work as a lab rat in a paint factory, or enough high school biology to work as a technician for an environmental services or pest extermination company.
I even remember enough of my high school math to be a bookkeeper, or to do routine accounting work.
Now that the schools are turning out mindless automatons, or business majors who never worked for a business, there are millions of people out there in my age group, some needing work, others just tired of retirement and willing to step back in the workforce for a little extra cash. Business won't hire them because they are not willing to work for nothing, or because business can't afford the health insurance. These oldsters also have great work habits and plenty of job experience.
You get what you pay for, either in the products you buy, or the people you hire.
Even a burned-out science major can tell you that.
