Well, to be fair, these things have been a "good ole boy club" since time immemorial. Even when the boss hired personally, it never hurt to know the guy, be referred by a mutual friend, or be married to his daughter. I got my job at Gravity Probe B when someone who used to work with me at a rocket company went to work there and gave me a good reference.
