The advantage of the IAS viewer is that it doesn't have to load into memory the full image all at once. Also, it can view the image stored on the remote server rather than downloading it to you hard drive.
For instance one of my computers has 256 mbytes RAM and only 1.6 gbytes remaining on the hard drive. But it was able to display a 1 gbyte image by using the option of accessing it on the remote server.
