There are several possibilities

The first possibility is that you create currents with tagged frequencies for specific objects. If it's anything like a Tesla coil we're talking 100,000+ cycles per second versus the 60 cycles our walls deliver.

The funny thing about current at this high frequency is that it cant penetrate objects more than a fraction of a millimeter or so, but rather flows along the outside of them until grounded.

So instead of electrocuting everyone in the area with braces, they all simply become conductors in the presence of the field. I suspect many sensitive electronic objects would experience interference because such frequencies essentially become radio broadcasts.

If you broadcast current at a specific frequency and design certain objects to work with that frequency - you have your 'discerning' current-object relationship.

To be quite honest, I wouldn't put one in my home either.

Broadcasting power as I envisioned it, would work best with a tall tower-like central broadcasting point and very tall local receivers, working on isolated frequencies which then distribute power conventionally. (I.e. a huge power plant in Central Africa broadcasts to receivers throughout Africa or a power plant in Baghdad, bringing power to remote areas without electricity.)

This sounds like a formula for mass purchases, requiring the homeowner with such a device to buy everything electrical they own all over again. And yes, it also sounds like a formula for future medical class-action lawsuits.
